Uptake ELD
The Uptake ELD app was a smartphone app designed to help commercial drivers record and display their Hours of Service (HOS) and record of duty status (RODS). It displays data recorded by an Electronic Logging Device installed in the vehicle and allows for reporting in accordance with federal regulations.
Uptake created the app in 2017, right when commercial drivers were required to start tracking their hours digitally. There was much resistance to this change by the users who were used to pen and paper. The goals of the materials below were both to educate on the app itself but also ease the change management process.
A particular challenge of this project was content delivery. Truck drivers are in motion, so the material had to either be delivered to them on their phones or through one-pagers, as they are not sitting at an office with time to go through training on a traditional LMS.
Another challenge was that the product team would quickly change the app design, often on extremely short notice to my team, Educational Services. To be able to keep up with the changes and stay under budget, the videos make use of Amazon Polly text-to-speech software, which isn’t as polished as a professional voiceover artist, but a clever solution for the problem at hand. The videos were created in Adobe After Effects or iMovie.
